Edmonton, capital of Canada's Alberta province, sits on the North Saskatchewan River. Its past is recreated at Fort Edmonton Park, a living history museum with an 1846 fort and streets from 1885, 1905 and 1920. The city's contemporary landmarks include the Royal Alberta Museum, with aboriginal-culture and natural-history galleries, and the futuristic-looking Art Gallery of Alberta, known for its First Nations art.

Calgary, a cosmopolitan Alberta city with numerous skyscrapers, owes its rapid growth to its status as the centre of Canada’s oil industry. However, it’s still steeped in the western culture that earned it the nickname “Cowtown,” evident in the Calgary Stampede, its massive July rodeo and festival that grew out of the farming exhibitions once presented here.

Manufacturing

Companies that take one or more products and create new products from them are part of the manufacturing industry. These companies may smelt ore into iron or use that iron to make machinery. Manufacturers refine petroleum, process beets into sugar, or make dog food. Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, a national trade and industry association, reported that in 2016, Alberta's major manufacturing sectors were food products (21.7%), chemical products (21.1%), and petroleum and coal products (20.3%).

Alberta is home to some of Canada's most impressive scenery, where the prairies meet the mountains and spectacular snow-capped peaks dominate the skyline. The awe-inspiring glaciers and turquoise lakes of Banff and Jasper National Parks draw millions of visitors each year to this province. In winter, skiers take to the slopes, which offer some of the best skiing in North America. Calgary, well known for hosting the annual Calgary Stampede, is a vibrant, modern city that has grown substantially in recent decades and offers a wealth of entertainment options. Further north, the provincial capital of Edmonton is home to West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping center in Canada, along with numerous other cultural attractions.
